Places to See!

From craft beers to pizza, to local cafés, sweet shops, retailers, and restaurants…our little piece of paradise is much more than good snow and winter skiing. Book some extra days, go to the backcountry, go kayaking, visit Backwater Falls, take in some music or throw a line in the water! We can’t wait to see you!

Thomas and Davis are towns rich in history surrounded by some of the nation’s best outdoor recreation! From skiing at Canaan Valley and Timberline, to the hiking trails of the Dolly Sods Backcountry, great fishing, kayaking, and limitless outdoor recreation. (Not to mention 3 breweries and great places to eat!)

Blackwater Falls State Park
Blackwater Falls is a must see state park! Great hiking trails and overlooks for breathtaking photos, romantic hikes, and a refreshing blast of nature’s power. This is a great area for picnics, bathrooms, and snacks as well.

Dolly Sods Wilderness
Dolly Sods Wilderness Area one of nature’s finest! From Red Creek to Bear Rocks, there are great trails for day hikers (note: mountain bikes are not allowed inside of the wilderness boundary) as well as multi-day users. Beautiful vistas, blueberries and Fire Bushes highlight the area and provide one of the nation’s top spots for stargazing.

Mountain Biking
Fulton Outdoors provides great access from all three of their developments with access to the River Rail Trails (great for families), as well as great single track at Moon Rocks, Camp 70, and Hoodoo Voodoo. Fun times for novice to expert riders.

River Rail Trails
Old railroad grades provide for one of the Potomac Highlands greatest outdoor recreation assets. The Blackwater River Rail Trail goes all the way to Elkins and provides for a great route for a walk over to town for a cup of coffee, or for a day ride with family and friends. This is a great access for fisherman and kayaking as well.

Douglas Falls
Douglas Falls is located just on the edge of Thomas along the River Trail and near the old coke ovens. The trail to get to this view is pretty steep so make sure you have good boots or shoes. This is a beautiful view and a great place for a picnic as well!

Shopping on Front Street
Front Street is located in Thomas and features the world famous Purple Fiddle, The Christmas Shoppe, several art galleries, antique stores, gift shops and coffee shops. This a great place spring, summer, winter and fall! Especially fun on July 4th!

The Town of Davis
Also known as Stumptown—this little town has a historic past in the timber industry, and pushes to redefine the future of mountain living and craft brewing. This is another great area to shop, dine, and partake in a local craft beer (featuring Stumptown Brewing).

Art Galleries
There are several great art galleries on Front Street in Thomas, as well as one in Davis. Be sure to take your time, ask questions, and support the local artist and artisans. When your done, be sure to check out one of the nearby coffee shops, cafés, or breweries!

Breweries
The picture above is a flight of beer at Mountain State Brewing. They have great food and pizza as well. Make sure you have a designated driver, and then go visit Stumptown and Big Timber as well!

Canaan Valley State Park
Canaan Valley State Park has a lodge and great skiing, mountain biking and snowboarding opportunities. Once winter subsides, visitors can enjoy mountain biking, hiking and tennis.

Timberline
Whether you are into downhill, snowboarding or mountain biking this is a great multi season resort to get your adventure on! Surrounded by some great places to eat as well!

White Grass Skiing Center
White Grass is a full service cross country ski center and delicious café located in Canaan Valley, WV. Established in 1979, it offers over 35 miles of trails along 2500 acres. Open December – March.

Toothache Arcade
Great fun for the kids and the entire family. This is a nostalgic game room with pinball and arcade machines, as well as many of your current favorites. This is a must-see stop while you are in Davis. Get a pass, bring a friend, and get your game on!

Boulder Park
What began as a creative initiative to repurpose boulders unearthed during the construction of US Rt. 48 has blossomed into a vibrant outdoor recreation space, geared for beginners and small children.

Adventure Guild Game Shop
Board games, role playing games, graphic novels, miniatures, paints and play spaces—they have it all (Front Street, Thomas)! There are private gaming rooms that can be reserved, as well as a game cafe where you can rent just about any game.

Hunting
Tucker County is a great place to hunt! Whitetail deer and turkey hunters love visiting the Potomac Highlands. Be sure that you have your West Virginia Hunting License on you, and enjoy the hunt!

Fishing
There are many good streams in the Potomac Highlands! The Blackwater is a favorite for many trout fishermen, and the North Fork of the Blackwater is great flat water filled with Perch, Catfish, Trout, and Small Mouth. Be sure you have your West Virginia Fishing License (it is required)!
